Summary

This title is translated by Louise & Aylmer Maude。 With an Introduction by Henry and Olga Claridge, University of Kent at Canterbury。

'War and Peace' is a vast epic centred on Napoleon's war with Russia。 While it expresses Tolstoy's view that history is an inexorable process which man cannot influence, he peoples his great novel with a cast of over five hundred characters。

Three of these, the artless and delightful Natasha Rostov, the world-weary Prince Andrew Bolkonsky and the idealistic Pierre Bezukhov illustrate Tolstoy's philosophy in this novel of unquestioned mastery。 This translation is one which received Tolstoy's approval。

He was just all over the place with this one。 。。。more

what to even say about this book? long。 very russian。 too much war。 it did have the wide scope it’s hailed for, but i think all of tolstoy’s philosophical investigations were told to us, rather than shown。 thus the characters fell flat for me。 ? out of 5

Finally finished this book。I have mixed feelings。 I didn’t totally enjoy the book。 Although there were some parts that made me laugh so hard, I found some parts very annoying and confusing。 Would I recommend this book?Sure, if you are a fan of the Napoleonic war go for it。 Lastly, I’ve been expecting a lot from this book。 However, as I DRAG myself to the end I found nothing but unimportant lengthy descriptions, sporadic characters, and repetitive information that made this book agonizing to read Finally finished this book。I have mixed feelings。 I didn’t totally enjoy the book。 Although there were some parts that made me laugh so hard, I found some parts very annoying and confusing。 Would I recommend this book?Sure, if you are a fan of the Napoleonic war go for it。 Lastly, I’ve been expecting a lot from this book。 However, as I DRAG myself to the end I found nothing but unimportant lengthy descriptions, sporadic characters, and repetitive information that made this book agonizing to read。 (the war parts too 👀) These are just my honest opinion。 Anyway, I love reading and it wasn’t a waste of time。 I’m grateful that I already have an idea what this book about。 。。。more

There is not much I can add to the plethora of reviews of this masterpiece, so instead I'll reflect on how the passage of time has changed my enjoyment of it。 I first read this as a teenager over 20 years ago and while I recall enjoying it I admit I don't remember much of the plot。 I also recall that, at times, I found it a slog but at other times it was a page-turner。I used this newer translation by Anthony Briggs instead of my tired old Wordsworth Editions copy which I believe to be the Maude There is not much I can add to the plethora of reviews of this masterpiece, so instead I'll reflect on how the passage of time has changed my enjoyment of it。 I first read this as a teenager over 20 years ago and while I recall enjoying it I admit I don't remember much of the plot。 I also recall that, at times, I found it a slog but at other times it was a page-turner。I used this newer translation by Anthony Briggs instead of my tired old Wordsworth Editions copy which I believe to be the Maude translation。 It's been much to long to give a meaningful comparison of the translations themselves, but Briggs' goal of the English being as readable to a native English reader as the Russian is to a Russian is achieved。When I first read this, the scenes of War were what I enjoyed most。 Now, with much more life under the belt, the scenes of Peace were far more fascinating。 I certainly emphasise with the characters more, and different characters made bigger impressions, especially Natasha and Marya。 The asides about historical interpretation are still a bit of a slog (especially Part 2 of the Epilogue) but I suspect I understood them this time round and not before。Perhaps the most surprising is that so much of this could take place today, at least once you step out of the historic Napoleanic backdrop。 The excitement and doubts of love, the grief and confusion of loss, the bravery around friends and the cowardice in the heat of battle, they are all aspects of the human experience。 The majesty of this book is that you feel you are experiencing these moments with the characters, at one moment in a opulent ball room and the next right in a battlefield。 。。。more

So absolutely worth the 60 hours listening to the audiobook。 Every now and then I had to stop whatever I was doing to just think and ponder on the meaning of a paragraph。 It really puts the whole world into perspective。 Is power one person’s will carried out by others?

It took me a few tries over the years to get past the 1st 100 pages。 The love stories involved are a bit cliche, but one must realize that this was a prototype back in its day。 The thoughts and reflections on the Napoleonic War are second to none。 I think Tolstoy is a fine author。 However, saying that he has and insight to the human psyche unparalleled by others is overly generous。

Mostly fiction about several aristocratic families during the Napoleon Wars in Russia, also part nonfiction about the fallacies of history books and the causes of war。 Much better than I expected。 The characters are human, flawed, and deep。 Their stories were not always predictable。 Although I don't agree with all of Tolstoy's views, I appreciate them for their time。 I can see myself rereading one day。 Mostly fiction about several aristocratic families during the Napoleon Wars in Russia, also part nonfiction about the fallacies of history books and the causes of war。 Much better than I expected。 The characters are human, flawed, and deep。 Their stories were not always predictable。 Although I don't agree with all of Tolstoy's views, I appreciate them for their time。 I can see myself rereading one day。 。。。more

While I am ecstatic to be done with the book, it was not a pain to read。 I have rarely found such compelling characters in literature, and I kind of loved the hodgepodge style in which the book was written。 Tolstoy included elements of fiction and history and historiography and philosophy, all which worked well together。 I am pretty excited to be able to say that I have read this book, as it was quite a feat and many times I fell behind on my goal。 4 stars for the beautiful imagery and fun chara While I am ecstatic to be done with the book, it was not a pain to read。 I have rarely found such compelling characters in literature, and I kind of loved the hodgepodge style in which the book was written。 Tolstoy included elements of fiction and history and historiography and philosophy, all which worked well together。 I am pretty excited to be able to say that I have read this book, as it was quite a feat and many times I fell behind on my goal。 4 stars for the beautiful imagery and fun characters, -1 star because it was just too damn long。 。。。more

War and Peace really has no right to be as good as it is。。。it is incredibly long, it's meanders with Tolstoy's philosophical views interspersed, it's complex with many characters and dense history。 But it is an incredible achievement, a sweeping masterpiece of a novel and one that lives up to the hype。It would take many words (which some of the other reviewers have bothered with) to effectively summarize this novel。 At its core, it is a historical novel set during the Napoleonic wars culminating War and Peace really has no right to be as good as it is。。。it is incredibly long, it's meanders with Tolstoy's philosophical views interspersed, it's complex with many characters and dense history。 But it is an incredible achievement, a sweeping masterpiece of a novel and one that lives up to the hype。It would take many words (which some of the other reviewers have bothered with) to effectively summarize this novel。 At its core, it is a historical novel set during the Napoleonic wars culminating with the French invasion of Russia。 It chronicles these events through a large cast of characters, primarily focused on four aristocratic Russian families。 The character development is a strength of the novel and you grow to love each of the main characters - all of who follow unique intersecting arcs。 Personal favorites were Prince Andrey who shunned social ambition and became skeptical of the world, but at the same time was loyal and intelligent throughout。 And Natasha Rostov who had a bit of the manic pixie dream girl syndrome, but brought some levity and innocence to a setting at a particularly dark time。 You can tell Tolstoy was a history buff because despite this being fiction the battles and "real" events portrayed are done in such a way that they are extremely readable but also informative。 But man he hated Napoleon (lol)。Shout out to the Anthony Briggs translation - while I haven't read any of the other versions, this translation made the book very readable but still seemed to retain its original voice At the end of the day, part of how you can judge a novels impact is how it lasts with you。。。I feel that after finishing War and Peace I'm eager to learn more about Russian history, would now willingly tackle Anna Karenina, and have added Moscow and St Petersburg as places that I'd like to visit someday。 It's a heavy book literally and figuratively, but if you're willing to brave it, you'll be rewarded 。。。more

This book is awesome。 At times, you are buried in the descriptive。 For being written only several decades after 1812, you get a unique picture of life through a familial lens。 There are no BIPOC LBGQTRS+ Gender Bending Trannies, or stupid leftist NPCs which make it even better。 Tolstoy was at Sevastopol, so he writes with experience that most would never ever comprehend。

Alan Menachemson

Well worth the time it took to readTolstoy is consistent and possibly repetitive in his understatement。 Especially if the empty headed rich exploiters。 He excels at dissecting religion and meaning。 But advisable to scan over his comments on the causes and heroes on the War。 His theme resonates, but his dated dissection is stale

Most of my complaints can be boiled down to me really not liking the writing in this。 I'm glad to have read it, it wasn't terrible, and I do think there's a somewhat-compelling plot buried in here; however, the writing itself feels somewhat pedantic and largely like Tolstoy is telling instead of showing me。 Most of my complaints can be boiled down to me really not liking the writing in this。 I'm glad to have read it, it wasn't terrible, and I do think there's a somewhat-compelling plot buried in here; however, the writing itself feels somewhat pedantic and largely like Tolstoy is telling instead of showing me。 。。。more
